I’m KW Abbott. I love science fiction and fantasy.

Writing is only one part of my story.

I’ve spent most of my professional life working in information technology, cybersecurity, and technical leadership. My career has taken me through everything from hands-on infrastructure and systems work to large technical projects, problem solving, and leadership. Along the way, mentoring became one of the parts of the job I enjoy most. I like helping people grow, sharing what I’ve learned, and giving someone the opportunity to take on something they may not have thought they were ready for.

A lot of that experience inevitably makes its way into my books.

I’m fascinated by people operating inside complicated systems. Leaders who have to make decisions without enough information. Teams trying to work together when everything is going wrong. Smart people who disagree with each other for perfectly reasonable reasons. And ordinary people who suddenly discover they're responsible for something much larger than themselves.

In science fiction, I get to explore those ideas through technology, military operations, politics, exploration, and the occasional very large spaceship. In fantasy, I get to explore many of the same ideas with considerably fewer servers and considerably more swords.

I’ve also been a reader for as long as I can remember. Science fiction and fantasy have always been favorites, along with military and political thrillers. Tom Clancy, J.R.R. Tolkien, Isaac Asimov, Brandon Sanderson, and many others have occupied a lot of space on my bookshelves over the years. They’re also responsible for a significant number of hours in which I should probably have been sleeping.

When I’m not working, writing, or reading, I enjoy golf. I use the word enjoy somewhat generously depending on how the round is going.

More important than any career, book, or hobby, though, is my family. I’m a husband, father, and grandfather, and those roles mean more to me than anything else I could put on this page.

At some point, writing went from something I always thought I might do someday to something I actually did.

Now I have a lot more stories I want to tell.
